실제의 모습을 확대하여 거대한 회화로 선보이는 리사 루이터의 작품 속 테마는 주로 풍경과 일반 대중들이 살아가는 우리의 생활 모습이다. 수많은 사람의 무리 속에서 열광하며 콘서트를 즐기는 군중들, 빽빽이 앉아서 무언가를 응시하거나 차를 마시는 사람들, 복잡한 휴양지에서 휴식을 취하는 모습등은 현대 사회를 구성하는 대다수의 모습일 것이다. 또한, 그녀가 담은 풍경화는 사람들의 흔적이 베인 시골 자연환경이나 순수한 자연의 한 단면을 확대하여 단순하게 구성된 이미지로 묘사하고 있다.

풍경화는 자연 그대로 거칠지만 순수한 그 모습의 한 단면을 크게 확대하여 색과 면에 의한 수직방향 느낌을 강조하여 표현하고 있는데, 이것은 과거에 선보였던 시골 농촌 사회의 논, 밭 그리고 샛길 등이 포함된 문명화된 풍경을 단순화하여 표현하였던 것과는 다르게 보인다. 과거의 풍경들이 수평의 느낌으로 색-면이 캔버스 위쪽을 향해 겹겹으로 층층이 쌓인 것처럼 보여졌다면 이 작품들은 올 오버 회화 형태로 구성되어 전체적으로 캔버스를 고르게 덮은 추상화처럼 보이거나 나무들의 수직방향이 강조되는 빼곡히 찬 색면으로 묘사되었다. 이와 같은 풍경화는 그 실제 이미지 속에 반영된 작가의 개입으로 인해, 인위적인 면이 더욱 강조되어 기계적인 느낌의 그래픽 회화를 연상시키기도 한다. 더욱이 간결한 세부묘사로 단순화되어 평면적인 형태를 이루는 캔버스 속 이미지는 작가의 개성이 돋보이는 주관적인 색의 표현이 한층 더 부각되어 나타난다. 이와 같이 리사 루이터의 작품은 자연을 그대로 모사하는 회화 방식을 떠나 그것을 작가의 시선으로 재해석하여 새로운 이미지를 관객들에게 제시하는 현대적인 시각을 반영하고 있다.

예술 작품에 있어서 재현보다는 제시를 중시했던 개념미술 이후, 현대미술은 작가의 방법론적인 면에서 많은 변화를 가져왔고, 이는 리사 루이터의 작업 방식에서도 엿 볼 수 있는데 그녀의 회화는 자신이 직접 찍은 사진을 프로젝터를 이용해 사각 캔버스 속에 다시 재구성하기 때문이다. 작가는 프로젝터를 통해 비춰진 사진 속 이미지에 외곽선을 그려, 이미지를 분할하고 그 분할된 면을 각각 하나의 색으로 여러 번 덧칠하여 새로운 이미지를 만들어낸다. 이러한 과정 속에서 사진 속의 대상이 단순화되며 재창조되는데, 실제 이미지 속의 원근감을 감소시켜 캔버스 속의 이미지가 더욱 평면화되는 결과를 가져오기도 한다. 하지만 여러 번 덧칠한 색의 면이 얕은 입체감이 느껴지는 반투명성을 지녀 은은한 발색을 보여주는 효과가 나타나 신비적인 색채감이 강조되기도 한다.

그녀의 회화는 사진을 토대로 한, 현실의 순간을 포착하여 담은 이미지를 바탕으로 이루어지지만. 회화 속 풍경이나 인물이 캔버스 테두리 안에 재배치-설정되어, 단일색조의 조합으로 재구성되는 작업을 통해 작품이 완성된다. 실제의 모습으로부터 그려지지만, 대담한 구도와 함께 단순하고 간결한 세부 묘사가 돋보이는 그녀의 작품은 현실을 비켜선 색의 조화와 색면으로 쌓아 올린 투명한 입체감으로 새로운 이미지를 탄생시킨다. 또한, 큰 화폭의 가장자리까지 가득 찬 군중의 무리들은 회화 속 이미지보다 더욱 확장된 공간의 시각적 착각을 일으켜 우리의 시선을 머무르게 하며. 작가가 선택한 실제와는 다른 강렬한 색의 인위적인 조합은 몽환적인 분위기를 자아내어 우리에게는 외계와 같은 낯선 세계를 떠올리게 하기도 한다. 작가는 바쁘게 돌아가는 혼잡한 생활 속에서 휴식을 취하거나 군중들 사이에서 여가시간을 보내고 있는 현대인들의 모습을 그녀만의 시각으로 새롭게 관객들에게 보여주고 있다. 리사 루이터의 회화는 사실적 이미지인 사진에 작가의 개인적인 시선이 개입되어 단순화된 형태와 변형된 색으로서 나타난다. 때로는 이러한 그녀의 작품 세계가 현실이 아닌 비현실적인 세계로 보여짐으로써, 보는 이의 경험과 생각에 의해 또 다른 시공간이 만들어지는 새로운 주관적인 경험을 가능하게 해주기도 한다.

그러나 한편으로는 도시 일상과 같은 현실적인 주제들이 확대되어진 이미지는 우리가 살아가는 모습에 일정 거리를 둔 시선으로 객관화시켜 보여주는 팝아트적인 면을 지니고 있다. 주변의 흔한 물건이나 이미지를 전시공간에 선보여 우리의 사회를 한발 물러서 객관적인 시각으로 바라볼 수 있는 기회를 마련해주는 팝아트의 이론적인 요소가 나타나기 때문이다. 직접 손으로 그렸지만 리사 루이터의 그래픽적인 회화 느낌 또한 사람의 손길보다는 기계적인 느낌이 강한 팝아트의 작품 형태를 떠올리게 한다. 그녀는 개인이 아닌 집단으로서 우리가 살아가는 사회의 모습을 단순화시켜 절제된 화면으로 구성하고 있는 반면, 자율적이고 주관적인 그녀의 색채는 생소하고 낯설지만 신비스런 매력을 작품에 부여해주고 있다.

풍경과 인물이 어우러진 이번 전시는 복잡한 사회 속에서 북적거리지만 열광적으로 자신의 여가를 즐기고 있는 군중들의 모습을 그린 회화작품과 자연의 한 단면을 마치 색면 추상화처럼 정적인 감성으로 표현한 구성적 회화작품 등을 감상할 수 있을 것이다. 그녀의 작업은 우리 사회 이미지나 순수 자연 환경을 반영하고 있지만 개성이 뚜렷한 색상 선택과 디테일이 축소되어 단순화된 강렬한 색면회화의 틀을 지니고 있다. 사물이나 인물에 입체감을 표현하는 명암법을 배제하고 붓터치의 흔적 없이 한가지 색으로 덧칠해진 면들의 조화는 회화의 평면성을 가중시키기도 한다.

리사 루이터의 작품은 거리를 두고 관람하는 경우, 객관적 시각으로 감상할 수 있는 반면, 가까이 다가가는 관객에게는 선명한 색과 확대된 면으로 구성된 거대한 캔버스에 압도되어 그 속으로 흡수되는 경험도 느껴볼 수 있을 것이다.
