Artist : Julian Opie[줄리안 오피, 1958~]

영국 출신의 세계적인 작가인 줄리안 오피는 앤디 워홀 이후의 팝아트를 대표하는 가장 중요한 작가이다. 간결하고 매력적인 인물들의 이미지를 다룬 그의 작품은 픽토그램을 연상시키는 둥근 머리와 뚜렷하고 단순한 선으로 이루어진 전신상과 그리고 작가 자신의 주변 인물들을 클로즈-업해서 묘사한 반신상을 다룬 이미지들이 대표적이다. 작가의 일상에서 포착된 친밀한 이미지와 섬세하고 경쾌한 색채들은 그의 작품을 보는 모든 이들이 쉽게 공감하고 몰입할 수 있는 공통적인 미적 감수성을 창출해 내고 있다.

우리에게 이미 익숙한 경쾌하면서도 운동감 있는 줄리안 오피의 인물은 2000년이 되어서야 등장하는데, 80년대 후반까지 간결한 형상의 입체작품을 주로 해온 줄리안 오피는 90년대초를 지나면서 원형의 머리로만 표현된 단순한 인물들을 작업에 등장시키기 시작하였다. 1998년 미술행정가인 ‘엘렌’과 교사인 ‘폴’ 이 작품속에 등장한 것이 시초가 되어 이후 작가 주변의 가까운 인물들(화가 피오나, 학생 마르코, 주부 버지니아, 무용수 브루스 등)이 반복적으로 등장하기 시작하였다.

푸른 배경에 빨간색 원피스를 입고 춤을 추는 인물은 앤 Ann 이라는 인물로 줄리안 오피의 작품에 등장하는 주변인 중 하나이다. 2008년에 제작된 이 작품은 줄리안 오피의 간결하게 단순화된 인물의 특징을 잘 갖추고 있으며, 2008-2009년 사이에 제작된 인물의 운동감이 강조된 포즈를 포착한 시리즈에 속한다. 밝은 오렌지색 배경으로 걸음을 걷는 동작을 포착한 작품 Ruth walking in Jean 루스 워킹 인 진은 역시 줄리안 오피의 최근 작품에서 볼 수 있는 특징들을 갖고 있다. 루스(Ruth)라는 인물은 줄리안 오피의 작품에 자주 등장하는 대표적인 인물로, 인물이 작품 속에서 하나의 단순회된 선으로 생략되기 전, 구체적 형상을 지닌 인물로도 자주 묘사되었고, 원화가 아닌 판화로도 제작되어 우리에게 널리 알려져 있는 줄리안 오피의 가장 대중적이면서도 대표적인 이미지의 인물에 해당된다.

작가 소개
줄리안 오피는 1958년 런던에서 태어났다. 옥스포드의 드래곤 스쿨과 막달렌 컬리지 스쿨을 다닌 그는 1982년 골드스미스 컬리지를 졸업하였으며, 이후 몇 년 만에 유럽의 주요 미술관과 갤러리 등에서 전시하기 시작했다. 그는 골드스미스에서 수학하면서 패트릭 콜필드(Patrick Caulfield)와 마이클 크레이그-마틴(Michael Craig-Martin) 등으로부터 영향을 받았다. 그의 작품들은 테이트 모던, 뉴욕 현대미술관, 동경국립현대미술관 등의 세계 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있으며, 특히 최근에는 유럽과 미국, 일본 등지에서 많은 공공미술 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 줄리안 오피는 Tate Publishing에서 출판한 매리 홀록(Mary Horlock)의 <모던 아티스트 시리즈>에 주요 작가로 수록되었고, 대표적인 비평가이자 이론가인 Luisa Buck은 영국의 영향력 있는 미술인들을 분석한 에서 그를 현대 영국미술을 이끄는 주요 인물로 다루고 있다.
